Meet the GILENYA Guides

SCOTT M.

Husband and father • Mail carrier • Volunteer fire chief

  • How did you find out you had relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS)?
  • I woke up Easter morning in 2000 blind in my right eye. My optometrist met me right away at his office and admitted this was beyond him. He recommended a neurologist who, with the help of an MRI and spinal tap, diagnosed relapsing MS.
  • Q. What did you do then?
  • A.I had to make a lot of adjustments because of MS. I stopped firefighting and took an administrative position. But with all my modifications and medications, I was relapsing and my work was getting more and more difficult.
  • Q. What's your attitude about having relapsing MS?
  • A.I have never asked in all this time, 'Why me?' Just doesn't occur to me to feel sorry for myself. I just go about finding the best way to cope with it.
  • Q. What do you tell other people with relapsing MS?
  • A.This is not the end. Just a new beginning. It is scary until you learn enough to know that. You'll get good at finding shade and staying out of the sun, and you'll find the perspective you need to realize what this is all about.
  • Q. How has adversity made you stronger?
  • A.You learn how to keep an upbeat outlook on yourself and life in general. There are things that can help you. Resources you can utilize to help you. You learn to get around the challenges MS throws in your path.
  • Q. How did you find your way to GILENYA®?
  • A.When something isn't working, it's my job to fix it. Here's my usual philosophy. If something's broken, you fix it. Maybe try to fix it again. Or if not, throw it away. That's not an option when you're the one that's broken. You just have to keep trying until you find something that can help.
  • Q. Why are you a GILENYA Guide?
  • A.I'm a fixer. If there is someone who just got diagnosed or they have a problem, maybe I can help. It's what I do.

*GILENYA can result in a slow heart rate when first taken. You will be observed by a health care professional for at least 6 hours after you take your first dose. You may need to repeat this monitoring if you miss a dose or are a child who is moving to 0.5 mg from the 0.25 mg dose.
