Meet the GILENYA Guides

James J.

Husband and father • Industrial equipment technician • Hunter, motorcyclist, football coach

  • How did you get your relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis?
  • I woke one day with numbness in my arms. By the end of the day that lack of feeling spread to one whole side of my body. I got an MRI and it showed relapsing MS.
  • Q. How did you handle it?
  • A.I was shocked initially. I didn't want to think about it much. Just get on therapy and go on with my regular life.
  • Q. What do you think about relapsing MS now?
  • A.I think a lot of it is about attitude. I still try to not focus on being sick or having an illness. I try to be as 'normal' as possible and keep on going.
  • Q. When you meet other people with relapsing MS, what do you say?
  • A.A lot of people with MS get down and they stop believing. I have never done that. You just have to keep moving and do the best you can. You need to cut yourself some slack at times. But you just don't get down on yourself.
  • Q. Has MS changed your philosophy?
  • A.Maybe a little bit. I don't follow all the rules. I see what works for me. I just live my own life.
  • Q. What brought you to GILENYA®?
  • A.I was having relapses, but I was never hospitalized. I just took steroids and I'd gut it out. That's how it was for 10 years or so, until my doctor and I decided this wasn't acceptable. Looking back now, 10 years was too long to wait."
  • Q. Why are you a GILENYA Guide?
  • A.People with relapsing MS need to understand that there are good options for them. This is a disease that people used to avoid talking about. That has to change.

*GILENYA can result in a slow heart rate when first taken. You will be observed by a health care professional for at least 6 hours after you take your first dose. You may need to repeat this monitoring if you miss a dose or are a child who is moving to 0.5 mg from the 0.25 mg dose.

GILENYA reduced the frequency of relapses by 52% in a 1-year study vs Avonex and by 54% in a 2-year study vs placebo.

Avonex is a registered trademark of Biogen.
